Inside the See Something Say Something School Assembly
An educational, proactive session built to hold the attention of a full gym of middle school or high school students while teaching a genuinely serious set of skills.
How the assembly runs
1. Earning the room
Jim opens with performance magic projected for the whole audience. It is a deliberate attention strategy: students who are engaged in the first ninety seconds stay engaged for the safety content that follows.
2. Recognizing warning signs
Students learn what changes in behavior, language and online activity are worth paying attention to — withdrawal, escalating threats framed as jokes, sudden shifts in a friend's routine.
3. Speaking up safely
The core distinction of the assembly: tattling tries to get someone in trouble, reporting tries to keep someone safe. Students rehearse the actual sentence they would say to an adult.
4. Trusted adults and reporting pathways
Jim references your school's real reporting channels so students leave knowing your process. Every student is asked to identify two adults in the building they would approach.
5. Facts, not rumors
An audience participation segment shows how quickly information distorts as it travels, then connects that to why staff need what a student actually saw, where, and when.
6. Follow-up quizzes
Teachers receive quiz material to run in advisory the following week, turning a single assembly into measurable retention data for administrators.
Middle school and high school versions
Grades 6-8 spend more time on the fear of being labeled a snitch, group-chat behavior, and the moment a joke stops being a joke. Grades 9-12 move faster and go further into judgment calls, digital responsibility, and what actually happens after a report.
Most schools schedule both sessions back to back on the same day, which keeps travel costs down and lets the whole building share one message.
